A woman from Houston vacationing in Breckenridge died in a two car collision on Highway 9 at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday by Summit High School.
Stephanie Phillips, 28, was traveling in the passenger’s seat of a rented Hyundai Elantra when the driver, Richard Hsu, lost control of the car and drove into the lanes in the wrong direction, reported Colorado State Patrol officials. An oncoming Honda Pilot collided into the rental car’s passenger side.
Phillips passed away from blunt force trauma with internal bleeding, and Hsu was severely wounded.
The driver of the Honda was not hurt in the incident.
Phillips was buckled in but the Pilot’s “intrusion into the passenger side of the rental car was significant,” said the Summit County Coroner’s Office.
Phillips and Hsu were headed south on Highway 9 at mile marker 94 when they veered into the other lanes and were struck by the Honda Pilot.
Officials reported that alcohol is not believed to be involved in the crash, but they are searching other possible sources for the incident such as weather conditions, speed and possibly distracted driving.
Highway 9 was shut down from the high school to Peak One Circle for a little less than an hour after the accident.
