Icy roads constantly need clearing

Due to poor weather and road conditions, the I-69 was the site of many major accidents this weekend. Officials said the cars were as “pinballs in a pinball machine.”

“I’ve seen a lot of cars off in ditches,” stated truck driver Clyde Sexton. “People need to slow down.”

From just south of Exit 99 to Exit 109, about a dozen crashes were scattered on the Hoosier Interstate. The icy weather had INDOT out all day to hopefully stop more crashes from taking place.

“If we see an accident, we’ll just call dispatch for the Sheriff, city or state [police],” stated INDOT crew leader Mitchell Means.

Means was on the job at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday and continued plowing until early afternoon. INDOT reports that the Fort Wayne area had about a full crew working on the roads Saturday morning with 37 plows on the highways.

“If we start treating the road, then we have to treat it all night just to keep it from freezing,” informed Means.

INDOT officials report that the even after the streets are cleared, black ice can still be there during the day. So the best advice is to slow down.

Officials report that the majority of the highways were clear by early Saturday afternoon.
